This verse highlights a radical redefinition of "inheritance"; instead of land, God Himself becomes the Levites' portion, with the sacred offerings designated as their "food." This wasn't just about sustenance; it meant their entire livelihood and identity were directly tied to serving God and receiving from Him.
“The Levitical priests, all the tribe of Levi, shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel. They shall eat the LORD’s food offerings as their inheritance. They shall have no inheritance among their brothers; the LORD is their inheritance, as he promised them.
English Standard Version (ESV)
As Moses lays out the future for Israel entering the Promised Land, he addresses the tribe of Levi, who have a unique calling. Unlike the other tribes, they will not receive a portion of the land as their inheritance; instead, their sustenance will come directly from the offerings given to the Lord. This provision ensures they can dedicate themselves fully to their sacred service without the distractions of farming or land ownership.
Imagine giving up any claim to land, a stable home, or a family inheritance. That's exactly what the Levites did. Why would God design such a life for His chosen ministers?
In the system God established for Israel, the tribe of Levi, which included the priests, received no land inheritance like the other tribes. This might seem like a disadvantage, but it was a deliberate design.

The arrangement for the Levites highlights a fundamental principle: those dedicated to full-time divine service have needs met in a way distinct from those engaged in secular occupations.
