Deuteronomy 15:7-11

What does Deuteronomy 15:7-11 mean?

This verse doesn't just tell us not to ignore the poor; it highlights that the poverty itself is an opportunity. God presenting a "poor brother" within their community isn't a burden, but a chance to exercise compassion and demonstrate trust in His provision.

“If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be. Take care lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart and you say, ‘The seventh year, the year of release is near,’ and your eye look grudgingly on your poor brother, and you give him nothing, and he cry to the LORD against you, and you be guilty of sin. You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’

What Deuteronomy 15:7-11 means

This passage is part of a larger section (Deuteronomy 15:1-11) where Moses is explaining the laws surrounding the "year of release," a special time every seven years where debts were to be forgiven and indentured servants freed. Immediately following the instruction to release debts, this verse shifts focus to the ongoing responsibility to care for the poor within the community, emphasizing a generous spirit even as financial forgiveness is mandated. The context stresses that this isn't just about legal release, but a deep-seated attitude of compassion for fellow Israelites, especially those in need.

The Poor Are Our Brothers

The Bible doesn't shy away from the reality of poverty. But how does it frame our relationship with those who are struggling?

God's law in Deuteronomy is crystal clear: if you see a poor person among your people, they are your brother. This isn't just about financial transactions; it's about recognizing a shared humanity and a common Father.

Shared Identity: The text emphasizes "one of your brethren." This immediately calls us to see past the label of 'poor' and recognize the person as someone fundamentally like us, part of the same community.
Divine Connection: Because God is the one giving you this land, and He cares for all within it, His people are to reflect that care. Your neighbor's struggle is not distant; it is within "any of your towns" – close at hand.

Resisting the Hard Heart

It's easy to offer help, but what about the attitude behind the gift? God warns against a specific internal posture.

The verse explicitly commands, "you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand."

The Hardened Heart: To "harden your heart" means to become calloused, unfeeling, and indifferent to another's suffering. It’s an internal refusal to empathize or be moved by need.
