Imagine seeing a neighbor's amazing garden. Your first thought might be to ask how they got it so beautiful. But what if that garden was fertilized with something toxic?
God warns Israel here not to ask 'How did these nations serve their gods?' even after they've been defeated. It’s not just about avoiding their practices, but avoiding the curiosity about their practices.
Why the Curiosity is Dangerous
- It opens the door to sin: Asking 'how' implies a willingness to learn, which can easily lead to imitation. It’s like peeking over the fence into a neighbor's yard and finding yourself tempted to take something.
- It devalues God’s way: When we start wondering about other methods, it suggests we might be dissatisfied with God's commands. It hints that maybe God’s way isn’t enough, or isn't as appealing.
- It focuses on the method, not the outcome: The nations' gods might have had impressive rituals, but those rituals were often horrific and led to destruction. Focusing on the 'how' without considering the 'why' or the 'result' is foolish.
God wants our worship and service to be pure, based solely on what He reveals, not on what others are doing, especially those who stand condemned by Him.
