You might think God’s commands always come with clear instructions. But what happens when the people propose the plan?
Deuteronomy often retells the wilderness journey, highlighting the people's choices. In this passage, Moses recounts how the Israelites, upon reaching the edge of the Promised Land, didn't immediately leap forward in faith. Instead, they approached Moses with a plan: 'We will send men before us... and bring us word again.'
This wasn't God's direct command in this telling; it was a human suggestion, born out of a mix of practicality and, as other parts of Scripture reveal, underlying doubt and fear. While seemingly sensible on the surface—a scouting mission before a major advance—this initiative subtly shifted the focus from God's promised guidance to their own human strategy. It's a powerful reminder that even well-intentioned plans can mask a lack of full trust in God.
