English Standard Version (ESV)
Daniel has just seen visions of three beasts representing previous world empires, each more fearsome than the last. This fourth beast, however, surpasses all the others in its terrifying power and destructive capacity, symbolizing a future empire that will crush and dominate all in its path. The vision emphasizes its overwhelming strength, iron teeth for devouring, and ability to trample what remains, culminating in the appearance of ten horns, signifying multiple kingdoms that will arise from it.
The first three beasts in Daniel's vision are compared to known animals: a lion, a bear, and a leopard. But this fourth one? It's something else entirely.
Daniel struggles to even describe this fourth beast. It's not just fiercer; it's fundamentally different from anything that came before it. Think of it like this: if the first three were powerful predators, this one is a monstrous anomaly, a category of its own. This difference highlights its unique nature and the unprecedented scope of its power and terror. It represents a kingdom that surpasses the others in its sheer destructive force and its ability to obliterate.
This beast doesn't just conquer; it utterly destroys. What does it mean for a kingdom to 'devour, break in pieces, and stamp' its enemies?
The actions described here paint a vivid picture of relentless, total destruction. It's more than just military might; it's a systematic annihilation of everything in its path.

The 'ten horns' are a crucial detail that commentators widely agree represent ten kings or kingdoms that arise from the empire symbolized by the beast. This signifies not a single, monolithic ruler, but a fragmented power structure emerging from a larger entity.
