What's often missed is that Daniel's "excellent spirit" wasn't just about his piety, though that was a part of it. The text highlights his superior wisdom, prudence, and integrity in managing affairs – qualities that made him stand out to King Darius as the best candidate to lead the entire kingdom. This excellence, rooted in his God-given abilities, naturally set him apart and ultimately became the target of envy.
Then this Daniel became distinguished above all the other high officials and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him. And the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. Then the high officials and the satraps sought to find a ground for complaint against Daniel with regard to the kingdom, but they could find no ground for complaint or any fault, because he was faithful, and no error or fault was found in him.
English Standard Version (ESV)
King Darius, after conquering Babylon, restructured the government by appointing 120 satraps. He then singled out Daniel, a respected official from the former regime, for a prominent position above these satraps due to his exceptional wisdom and integrity, even planning to place him in charge of the entire kingdom. This extraordinary favor shown to Daniel, a foreigner, immediately ignited the intense envy and suspicion of the other high officials, setting the stage for their plot against him.
What makes someone stand out, not just in skill, but in character? Daniel's story offers a powerful glimpse.
Daniel wasn't just good at his job; he possessed an "excellent spirit" that set him apart. This phrase doesn't just mean he was smart or talented, though he certainly was.
A Spirit of Distinction
The original language suggests a spirit that "hangs over," meaning it's abundant, overflowing, and pre-eminent. It's a spirit that shines, making the person distinguished above others.
This excellence wasn't just about worldly wisdom, but a deep wellspring of integrity and capability that radiated outward. It was a spirit that caught the king's attention, leading him to consider placing Daniel in the highest position.
It's a reminder that genuine excellence, rooted in character and capability, doesn't go unnoticed. It has a way of elevating individuals, even in challenging environments.
Why would a king consider promoting a foreigner to the highest office? Daniel's character provides the answer.
Daniel's rise wasn't accidental. The text emphasizes that the reason for his distinction and the king's consideration of him for the top role was his "excellent spirit." However, commentators point out that this excellence encompassed both wisdom in administration and, crucially, integrity.
