Darius, the new ruler, wasn't just consolidating power; he was establishing a massive administrative structure with 120 officials ("satraps" in the original Persian) overseeing the entire realm. This wasn't just about governance; it was a strategic move to ensure the king's control and financial security by having these princes accountable to three chief presidents, one of whom was Daniel.
It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom 120 satraps, to be throughout the whole kingdom; and over them three high officials, of whom Daniel was one, to whom these satraps should give account, so that the king might suffer no loss. Then this Daniel became distinguished above all the other high officials and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him. And the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After conquering Babylon, King Darius reorganized the vast kingdom, establishing a system of 120 provincial governors, or "princes," to manage its affairs. Over these regional rulers, he appointed three chief presidents to ensure efficient administration and to prevent any loss or damage to the king's interests. Daniel's exceptional wisdom and integrity quickly made him stand out, leading Darius to consider placing him in charge of the entire realm.
