Daniel 5:18-20

What does Daniel 5:18-20 mean?

Daniel isn't just stating facts; he's drawing a direct line from God's sovereign power to Nebuchadnezzar's success, highlighting that all his dominion, power, and prestige ultimately flowed from the Most High God, not from his own strength or any of his gods. This serves as a crucial, often missed, reminder to Belshazzar that his own authority was also a gift, and therefore accountable to the true King.

O king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father kingship and greatness and glory and majesty. And because of the greatness that he gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. Whom he would, he killed, and whom he would, he kept alive; whom he would, he raised up, and whom he would, he humbled. But when his heart was lifted up and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was brought down from his kingly throne, and his glory was taken from him.

What Daniel 5:18-20 means

Daniel begins by reminding Belshazzar that all the immense power and glory Nebuchadnezzar possessed came directly from the Most High God, not from the king's own might or any of his gods. He draws a direct parallel between Nebuchadnezzar's pride and Belshazzar's current impiety, stressing that the king should have learned from his predecessor's dramatic downfall for a similar arrogance. This historical context sets the stage for Daniel to interpret the mysterious handwriting that has just appeared, revealing God's impending judgment on Belshazzar.

Sovereignty of the Most High God

Who's really in charge when kings and empires rise and fall? Daniel reminds us that true power doesn't belong to earthly rulers.

Daniel begins his message to Belshazzar by pointing to Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar's father (or grandfather). He makes a crucial point: the vast kingdom, the impressive majesty, the widespread glory, and the high honor Nebuchadnezzar possessed were not a result of his own strength or wisdom, nor were they given by any of the Babylonian gods.

Instead, Daniel declares boldly, 'the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar… a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honor.' This statement is foundational. It means that all authority, all power, and all the trappings of royalty ultimately flow from God alone. He is the supreme sovereign, and earthly rulers are merely stewards of the authority He entrusts to them.

This truth is a powerful reminder that no ruler, no matter how mighty, is independent of God. Their power is borrowed, and ultimately, they are accountable to Him.

The Warning of Pride and Ungratefulness

Nebuchadnezzar's story is a stark warning about what happens when power goes to your head. It's a lesson Daniel wants Belshazzar—and us—to learn.

Daniel doesn't just list Nebuchadnezzar's accomplishments; he immediately connects them to a critical turning point. While Nebuchadnezzar received all these gifts from God, the commentaries highlight that his 'heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride.' He forgot the source of his power and began to exalt himself.

This pride led to his downfall. Because Nebuchadnezzar failed to acknowledge God's sovereignty and instead attributed his success to himself, God humbled him dramatically. Daniel is telling Belshazzar, 'You have seen what happened to your father when he acted this way. You yourself have repeated these same mistakes, even worse.'
