Daniel 11:32-35

What does Daniel 11:32-35 mean?

The verse highlights a crucial distinction: those who "violate the covenant" are seduced by flattery, implying a weakness that embraces deceit, while those who "know their God" are strengthened and "take action," showing that true knowledge leads to active faithfulness. This isn't just about belief; it's about how that belief compels us to respond to the world, either by succumbing to lies or by courageously acting on truth.

He shall seduce with flattery those who violate the covenant, but the people who know their God shall stand firm and take action. And the wise among the people shall make many understand, though for some days they shall stumble by sword and flame, by captivity and plunder. When they stumble, they shall receive a little help. And many shall join themselves to them with flattery, and some of the wise shall stumble, so that they may be refined, purified, and made white, until the time of the end, for it still awaits the appointed time.

What Daniel 11:32-35 means

In this chapter, Daniel has been receiving a sweeping vision of future empires and kings, particularly focusing on the conflicts between the Seleucid (Syrian) and Ptolemaic (Egyptian) dynasties. This specific verse arrives after a description of a wicked king, identified as Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who will desecrate the Jewish temple and persecute God's people. The verse highlights a stark division within the Jewish community under this oppression: some will be easily swayed by the oppressor's promises, while a faithful remnant will stand firm.

The Seduction of Covenant Breakers

When faced with pressure, some people abandon their commitments. How does this verse describe their downfall, and what makes them vulnerable?

The verse identifies two groups of people in the face of a hostile power. The first group is described as those who 'do wickedly against the covenant.' These are individuals who have already strayed from their commitment to God. The adversary doesn't use force against them; instead, he uses 'flatteries.' This implies manipulation through appealing promises, worldly gain, or deceptive charm. Think of it like someone offering you a promotion or a shortcut if you just bend a few rules or compromise your values. These flatteries exploit their existing weakness and 'corrupt' them, leading them further away from their sacred commitments.

The Strength of Knowing God

While some fall away, others stand firm. What is the secret power that enables them to resist and even take action against overwhelming opposition?

In contrast to the corrupted, the verse points to 'the people who know their God.' This isn't just intellectual knowledge; it's a deep, relational acquaintance with God that leads to trust and obedience. Because they truly 'know their God,' they are empowered to 'stand firm.' This 'firmness' suggests a solid grounding, an unshakeable resolve rooted in their relationship with the Almighty. But it doesn't stop there; they also 'take action.' This isn't passive resistance. Their knowledge of God fuels courage and proactive steps, whether that's enduring persecution with boldness, defending their faith, or living out their convictions in a hostile world. Their strength comes not from within themselves, but from the God they know.
