Daniel 11:1-4

What does Daniel 11:1-4 mean?

What's easy to miss here is that the angel isn't just stating a fact; he's emphasizing his active involvement right from the start of this new Persian empire. The phrasing "I stood up to confirm and strengthen him" reveals that divine help isn't passive; angels were actively working behind the scenes to influence key figures and ensure God's purposes unfolded, even amidst political shifts. This highlights that prayer and divine intervention are intertwined forces shaping history.

“And as for me, in the first year of Darius the Mede, I stood up to confirm and strengthen him. “And now I will show you the truth. Behold, three more kings shall arise in Persia, and a fourth shall be far richer than all of them. And when he has become strong through his riches, he shall stir up all against the kingdom of Greece. Then a mighty king shall arise, who shall rule with great dominion and do as he wills. And as soon as he has arisen, his kingdom shall be broken and divided toward the four winds of heaven, but not to his posterity, nor according to the authority with which he ruled, for his kingdom shall be plucked up and go to others besides these.

What Daniel 11:1-4 means

This verse transitions from the heavenly vision in Daniel 10 to a historical account, marking the beginning of the Persian empire's dominance. The angel Gabriel explains that in the first year of King Darius the Mede's reign, he actively intervened to support Michael, the angelic prince of Israel, and bolster Darius's intentions towards the Jewish people. This divine assistance was crucial for the eventual decree allowing the Jews to return from exile and rebuild Jerusalem.

The Angel Gabriel's Role

Who is 'I' in this verse, and what does it mean for an angel to 'stand' and 'confirm'?

The verse begins with 'And as for me...', identifying the speaker as the angel Gabriel, who has been interacting with Daniel. He's not just a messenger but an active participant.

Divine Assistance at a Critical Juncture

Gabriel states he "stood up to confirm and strengthen him." This wasn't a passive stance but an active intervention.

Confirmation and Strengthening: This implies Gabriel's actions helped solidify a decision or a course of action. The scholarly context suggests this relates to the positive disposition of Darius the Mede (and Cyrus) towards the exiled Jews, a disposition that allowed for their return and the rebuilding of the Temple.
Co-operation with Michael: Some interpretations see Gabriel strengthening Michael, the 'prince' of Israel, in their cosmic battle for God's people. Others believe Gabriel directly supported Darius/Cyrus in their benevolent intentions toward the Jews.
Engagement in World Affairs: This shows that angelic beings are deeply involved in the unfolding of human history, particularly concerning God's chosen people.
