It's striking that Daniel heard the voice of words, but the overwhelming effect wasn't intellectual understanding, but a physical collapse into a deep sleep, face to the ground. This wasn't just fear; it was a profound, divinely induced stupor, showing how even hearing God's message can utterly incapacitate us apart from His sustaining grace.
Then I heard the sound of his words, and as I heard the sound of his words, I fell on my face in deep sleep with my face to the ground. And behold, a hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. And he said to me, “O Daniel, man greatly loved, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright, for now I have been sent to you.” And when he had spoken this word to me, I stood up trembling.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Daniel has just experienced a terrifying vision of a divine being, leaving him weak and unable to speak. Though overwhelmed and sensing his frailty, he still hears the powerful, multitudinous voice of this angelic messenger. The sheer awe and possibly the overwhelming sound cause him to fall into a profound swoon, collapsing with his face to the ground, a posture of utter submission and reverence before this heavenly encounter.
Daniel hears a voice that’s so immense, it's described as the 'sound of a multitude.' What happens when we truly hear the divine?
Daniel is in the presence of a divine messenger, a being so glorious that his very voice is overwhelming. It's not just words he hears, but a profound sound – 'like the voice of a multitude' (Daniel 10:6). This isn't an ordinary sound; it’s the resonance of heaven. Even though Daniel can't recall the specific message, the sound itself has an immediate and powerful effect on him.
Think about it: God's presence and His words aren't always gentle whispers. Sometimes, encountering the divine is like standing next to a thunderclap. This sound doesn't just enter his ears; it penetrates his entire being, shaking him to the core.
Daniel is overcome, falling into a 'deep sleep' with his face to the ground. What does this profound physical reaction reveal about encountering God?
The response Daniel has isn't just a polite bow; it’s a complete physical collapse. The text uses phrases like 'deep sleep' and 'swoon' to describe his state. He's not just tired; he’s utterly prostrate, his face to the earth, signifying total humility and reverence.
This reaction shows that encountering God's glory and His messengers can strip away all human pretense. It forces us to confront our smallness and His immense holiness. It’s a powerful reminder that true worship often involves a humbling of ourselves before the Almighty, acknowledging His sovereignty and power.
