While Daniel alone saw the magnificent vision, the terror that struck his companions wasn't just from a vague fear. They experienced a profound, supernatural dread that caused them to flee, showing that even without seeing the divine encounter, they were powerfully affected by its presence. This highlights how God's glory can be perceived and felt in different ways, not always through sight alone.
And I, Daniel, alone saw the vision, for the men who were with me did not see the vision, but a great trembling fell upon them, and they fled to hide themselves. So I was left alone and saw this great vision, and no strength was left in me. My radiant appearance was fearfully changed, and I retained no strength. Then I heard the sound of his words, and as I heard the sound of his words, I fell on my face in deep sleep with my face to the ground.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Daniel is deeply troubled by a vision of a glorious being on the banks of the Tigris River, a vision so profound that his companions, though present, don't see it clearly. Instead, a terrifying trembling seizes them, causing them to flee in panic. This divine encounter leaves Daniel alone, overwhelmed and physically weakened.
Have you ever sensed God's presence so powerfully that it leaves you trembling, even if others around you don't feel it the same way? Daniel and his companions experienced something similar.
A Spectrum of Experience
When God's powerful spiritual reality breaks through into our physical world, the response can be varied. In Daniel 10:7, Daniel alone sees the full vision of the angelic messenger.
What causes sheer terror when you can't even see what's coming? Daniel's companions demonstrate that true fear isn't always tied to a visible threat.
More Than Meets the Eye
The men with Daniel didn't see the divine messenger, but they absolutely felt its power. The text calls it a "great trembling."
