The verse highlights that "increasing in the knowledge of God" isn't just about learning more facts, but about how that knowledge grows through our good works. It's a dynamic process where our actions become the very soil in which our understanding of God deepens.
so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul's prayer for the Colossian believers begins with a deep desire for them to be "filled with the knowledge of God's will." This verse and the following ones explain what this knowledge should lead to: a life lived in a way that honors the Lord, characterized by pleasing Him through good works and growing in their understanding of Him.
What does it mean to live a life that truly honors God? Paul connects our actions directly to our identity in Christ.
Paul uses the image of 'walking' to describe the entirety of our daily lives and actions. To 'walk worthy of the Lord' means our conduct should reflect who He is and what He has done for us. It's about living in a way that is fitting and appropriate for those called by Him. This isn't about earning God's favor, but about responding to the incredible grace we've already received. It’s a life lived with Christ as the standard, mirroring His character and love in our own actions.
Is your faith just an internal feeling, or does it spill out into tangible good? Paul links pleasing God directly to active 'good works.'
The verse highlights two key outcomes of a life lived 'worthy of the Lord': bearing 'fruit in every good work' and increasing 'in the knowledge of God.' These aren't separate ideas but are deeply intertwined. Bearing fruit means our faith produces positive, tangible results in our actions – acts of kindness, service, and righteousness. This isn't about performing tasks to earn God's approval, but about allowing the life God has given us to naturally produce good things. These actions, in turn, deepen our understanding of God.
Does your faith feel static, or is it a journey of continuous discovery? Paul shows that true growth leads to a deeper, richer knowledge of God.
The phrase 'increasing in the knowledge of God' points to a dynamic, growing relationship with Him. This isn't just accumulating facts, but a deeper, experiential understanding of who God is – His character, His ways, and His will. This growth isn't achieved through passive observation but is often a result of actively living out our faith. As we engage in good works and strive to please the Lord, our understanding of Him expands. It's a cycle: knowing God leads to worthy living, and worthy living deepens our knowledge of Him.
