saying, “When will the new moon be over, that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, that we may offer wheat for sale, that we may make the ephah small and the shekel great and deal deceitfully with false balances, that we may buy the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals and sell the chaff of the wheat?”
English Standard Version (ESV)
The prophet Amos is exposing the greedy heart of Israel's merchants who are chafing under religious observances. They view the sacred new moon and Sabbath festivals not as times for rest and worship, but as inconvenient interruptions to their dishonest business practices. These merchants are actively manipulating their scales and measures to cheat people out of their goods and money, prioritizing profit over justice.
Amos hears the Israelites grumbling, not about hardship, but about worship days interrupting their business. What does this tell us about their hearts?
The people of Israel are shown to be utterly impatient with any day that prevents them from making money. They view the new moon festivals and the Sabbath not as opportunities for rest and spiritual reflection, but as burdensome interruptions to their trade. This reveals a deep-seated covetousness that has replaced their devotion to God. They are 'keeping sabbath and festival with their bodies, not with their minds,' as one commentator puts it. Their desire is to be 'their own masters again,' free to pursue their dishonest gains. These holy days, meant to draw them closer to God, are seen as mere obstacles to their worldly desires.
The Israelites weren't just impatient with worship; they were actively plotting to cheat their customers. How did they do it?
The Israelites are described as employing a two-pronged strategy of deceit in their business dealings. First, they 'make the ephah small,' meaning they gave less grain than the measure indicated, shortchanging the buyer. Second, they 'make the shekel great,' which means they used a heavier weight when receiving payment, thus demanding more money than the goods were worth. This is a double fraud—receiving less for what they sold and demanding more for what they received. They are also described as 'dealing deceitfully with false balances,' further emphasizing their elaborate and systemic dishonesty. These practices were a direct violation of God's commands for just dealings.
