God’s disgust is so profound here that He uses not one, but two strong verbs: "I hate, I despise." This isn't about the religious holidays themselves, but about the people’s intention behind them—they were performing rituals while clinging to their sins, hoping to trick God with outward shows of devotion.
“I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; and the peace offerings of your fattened animals, I will not look upon them. Take away from me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Northern Kingdom of Israel is celebrating religious festivals and assemblies with great zeal, offering abundant sacrifices, believing this will secure God's favor. However, they've become complacent in their worship, engaging in social injustice and idolatry alongside their outward piety. God, through Amos, declares that He despises these hollow celebrations because they lack genuine love, justice, and obedience.
God utterly rejects religious activities that are performed without genuine devotion. What does this look like in our lives?
Amos' message here is stark: God hates and despises the feasts and solemn assemblies of Israel. This isn't just a mild disappointment; it's a visceral rejection. Why? Because their outward show of worship was completely detached from their inner lives and their actions.
The Performance vs. The Person
Israel was going through the religious motions. They offered countless sacrifices – the best of their animals, too – and gathered for their appointed festivals. But their hearts were far from God. They were filled with injustice, oppression, and idolatry. Their
That phrase 'I will not smell' sounds strange, but it carries profound meaning about what truly pleases God.
When Amos says God 'will not smell' their solemn assemblies, he's using imagery related to the sacrificial system. The smoke from the burnt offerings, particularly the fat, was meant to ascend to God as a pleasing aroma – a sign of acceptance and delight.
God's Scented Rejection
But for Israel, the aroma was anything but pleasing. Their sacrifices were tainted by their sin and disobedience. God wasn't receiving the 'sweet savor' He desired; instead, He was met with the stench of hypocrisy. It's like offering a beautiful gift with a bitter heart – the gift itself becomes offensive.

This indicates that God's acceptance of worship isn't just about the what (the sacrifices, the songs, the prayers) but the who and the how – the worshiper's inner state and their obedience.
