The verse highlights that God's presence, which the Israelites claimed was theirs, was actually conditional on their active pursuit of good. They wrongly believed their lineage guaranteed His favor, but Amos insists that "seeking good" is the real pathway to experiencing God's presence and life.
Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the LORD, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said. Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the LORD, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Amos is issuing a direct, urgent call to repentance, contrasting the people's empty boasts of God's favor with their corrupt practices. He's reminding them that their covenant status alone doesn't guarantee God's presence; true fellowship with God is conditional on seeking good and turning away from evil. This verse interrupts the pronouncements of judgment to offer a sliver of hope: amendment of life could still lead to God's gracious presence and protection.
Amos calls Israel to a radical shift: stop chasing evil and start pursuing good. But what does that really mean when you're already deep in sin?
The people of Israel weren't just passively doing wrong; they were actively seeking it out. They put the same energy into sinning as they did into their daily work.
The Heart of the Matter
Israel assumed God was automatically on their side. But Amos reveals that God's presence isn't a blank check; it comes with real conditions.
The phrase "and so the LORD, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said" is crucial. It highlights Israel's faulty assumption and God's conditional blessing.
