God reminds Israel that He brought them up from Egypt, emphasizing a movement from lower servitude to a higher, dignified status, not just out of Egypt, but into His care. Furthermore, the forty years in the wilderness weren't just a period of wandering, but a divinely orchestrated process of preparation to possess the land, suggesting His patient discipline was as crucial as the initial deliverance.
Also it was I who brought you up out of the land of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite. And I raised up some of your sons for prophets, and some of your young men for Nazirites. Is it not indeed so, O people of Israel?” declares the LORD.
English Standard Version (ESV)
God reminds Israel of His monumental acts of deliverance, recalling how He rescued them from slavery in Egypt and guided them through the wilderness for forty years. This recounting of past faithfulness serves as a stark contrast to their current corrupt behavior, setting up the subsequent accusations of their ingratitude and disobedience. The verse emphasizes that their very existence and the land they inhabit are gifts from God, not due to their own merit.
God's actions aren't just about getting us out of a jam; they're about shaping us for what's next. Think of the wilderness not just as a waiting room, but as a training ground.
The verse highlights two monumental acts of God: bringing Israel out of Egypt and leading them through the wilderness for forty years. While escaping slavery in Egypt was a miraculous rescue, the forty years in the wilderness weren't simply a delay.
A Divine Purpose in the Desert
Possessing the land wasn't a reward for good behavior; it was a divine appointment with an expectation. What did God expect in return for such an incredible gift?
The verse concludes with the purpose of this liberation and guidance: 'to possess the land of the Amorite.' This land was a gift from God, but it came with a profound responsibility.
