The phrase "for three transgressions, and for four" isn't just a way of saying "many sins." It’s God’s way of signaling that the Ammonites had passed a tipping point, accumulating enough wickedness that judgment was inevitable and unstoppable. The specific atrocity – ripping open pregnant women to expand their territory – highlights a horrifying, calculated cruelty driven by greed, not just a spontaneous act of war.
Thus says the LORD: “For three transgressions of the Ammonites, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they have ripped open pregnant women in Gilead, that they might enlarge their border. So I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour her strongholds, with shouting on the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind; and their king shall go into exile, he and his princes together,” says the LORD.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The prophet Amos begins a series of judgments against surrounding nations, starting with the Ammonites. This brutal act of ripping open pregnant women in Gilead was not just random violence, but a calculated atrocity committed to seize and expand their territory. God declares that such extreme cruelty, driven by greed for land, warrants His unwavering judgment, promising destruction upon their capital, Rabbah, and captivity for their king.
Why does God say 'three transgressions and for four'?
The phrase "three transgressions, and for four" isn't a mathematical count, but a way to express that a nation's sin has reached its absolute limit. It signifies a pattern of repeated, escalating rebellion that leaves no room for God's mercy to be extended further. God's justice is patient, but it is also sure. He doesn't arbitrarily punish; He allows sin to reach a certain fullness before judgment is executed.
