Ananias calls Saul "Brother," immediately recognizing him as part of God's family despite his past, highlighting the radical, immediate inclusion Jesus offers. This welcome is coupled with the laying on of hands, a gesture not just for healing but for impartation, directly linking physical restoration with receiving the Holy Spirit.
So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Ananias, a devout believer deeply unsettled by Saul's violent past, is divinely prompted to seek him out. He finds Saul blind and waiting, having just encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus. Ananias approaches Saul not as an enemy, but as a brother, laying hands on him to facilitate the restoration of his sight and his reception of the Holy Spirit.
Imagine being the worst enemy of a group, and then someone from that group shows up. What do you expect? Certainly not a warm welcome. But that's exactly what happens here.
Ananias, a follower of Jesus, is sent to the very man who was ruthlessly persecuting Christians. When Ananias finds Saul, his first word is "Brother Saul." This isn't just a polite greeting; it's a profound declaration.
A New Identity
Ananias brings a message from Jesus with two crucial purposes. What are they, and how do they work together to launch Saul's new life?
Ananias's mission from Jesus has two immediate goals for Saul:
Ask a follow-up
Connected Blessings
The text suggests these two gifts are deeply intertwined. The laying on of hands by Ananias is the means through which both the physical healing and the filling of the Spirit occur. This act not only restores Saul's physical vision but also marks his full entry into the community of faith, empowered by the Spirit.
Why didn't Jesus just heal Saul directly? What's the significance of Him using Ananias, a seemingly ordinary disciple, as the conduit for these powerful gifts?
It's striking that Jesus, who could have instantly healed Saul Himself, chose to work through Ananias. This highlights a beautiful principle of God's kingdom:
