The text highlights that Philip "proclaimed the Christ" to the Samaritans, indicating he wasn't just announcing a messiah, but the specific, long-awaited one. This points to a crucial detail: the Samaritans already had a strong expectation of the Messiah, a field already prepared by Jesus' own ministry there, making Philip's message a confirmation rather than a completely new concept.
Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ. And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip, when they heard him and saw the signs that he did. For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who had them, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. So there was much joy in that city.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Following the persecution after Stephen's death, the believers were scattered from Jerusalem, but Philip, one of the deacons, traveled to a city in Samaria. There, he proclaimed the message of Christ to the people. This was significant because Samaritans and Jews had a long-standing animosity, making this a bold step in spreading the gospel beyond its initial Jewish audience.
Why Samaria? This wasn't an accidental mission. Philip stepped into a field already tilled, watered, and ready for harvest.
Jesus Himself had already been to Samaria, sharing the truth with a woman at the well (John 4). This encounter, and the subsequent belief of the townspeople, shows that Jesus’s ministry had prepared the ground. The Samaritans, though often in conflict with the Jews, shared a deep expectation of the Messiah. Philip's arrival wasn't out of the blue; it was a strategic move by God, building on the foundation Jesus had laid, demonstrating His consistent plan to reach all people.
Philip didn't just announce a name; he declared a reality. What did 'the Christ' mean to the Samaritans, and how did Philip present Him?
The phrase 'the Christ' (or 'the Messiah') held immense significance for both Jews and Samaritans, representing God's promised deliverer. Philip's task was to proclaim that this long-awaited One had indeed come in Jesus. This wasn't merely about conveying information but about presenting Jesus as the fulfillment of all their hopes and the embodiment of God's kingdom. The proclamation involved declaring His identity, His work, and His authority, leading to intellectual conviction and, ultimately, transformative faith.
Philip was a deacon, a servant. How did this role empower him to become a powerful evangelist reaching a new people?
Philip, one of the seven deacons chosen to serve the early church, steps into a prominent evangelistic role here. This demonstrates that serving God in one capacity doesn't preclude Him from using you in another, often unexpected, way. His background as a Hellenistic Jew likely equipped him to bridge cultural divides. The persecution that scattered the believers (Acts 8:1) became the catalyst for Philip to move beyond Jerusalem. He wasn't acting as an apostle, but as someone empowered by the Spirit to share the gospel, showing that God uses all His people, regardless of their official title, to advance His kingdom.
