Why would someone traveling with immense authority be so eager to understand a scroll?
The eunuch’s reading wasn't just a casual pastime; it was an active pursuit of understanding. While he was reading aloud, a common practice that helped with retention and focus, he reached a point where he realized he needed help. He confessed, 'How can I, unless someone guides me?'
This is a beautiful picture of humility and teachability. Despite his high position and presumably his intelligence, he recognized the limitations of his own understanding when it came to divine truth. He wasn't ashamed to admit his ignorance and actively sought out someone to explain the Scriptures to him. This openness is precisely what allowed Philip to step in and share the good news.
