Acts 6:2-5

What does Acts 6:2-5 mean?

The apostles frame their decision not as a burden they're unwilling to bear, but as a matter of proper function – it's not "pleasing" or suitable for them to neglect their primary calling of preaching God's word. They are essentially saying that while caring for the needs of the community is vital, it's a different kind of service that requires different people, so that the "ministry of the word" isn't compromised.

And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch.

What Acts 6:2-5 means

A grumble had arisen among the Hellenistic Jewish believers, who felt their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of aid compared to the Hebrew widows. In response, the apostles called a large meeting of the disciples, not to dismiss the complaint, but to propose a solution that would allow them to focus on prayer and the ministry of the word. They recognized that while caring for the practical needs was crucial, it wasn't their primary calling, and a more sustainable system was needed.

The Apostles' Noble Delegation

When faced with a growing problem, the apostles didn't shy away. Instead, they called a large meeting to address it head-on. How did they handle the situation with wisdom and grace?

The apostles, realizing the daily distribution of food was taking too much of their time, didn't ignore the complaint. Instead, they called 'the multitude of the disciples' together. This wasn't about shirking responsibility, but about wise delegation. They remembered precedents like Moses appointing helpers (Exodus 18:25) and understood that a healthy community needs different roles filled effectively. Their solution was to bring the whole congregation into the decision, ensuring transparency and buy-in, a model for representative decision-making.

Prioritizing the 'Word of God'

The apostles stated, 'It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.' What makes the 'word of God' so foundational?

The core of the apostles' mission was proclaiming the gospel – God's message of salvation. They saw this as their primary, God-given responsibility. The Greek word used here, often translated as 'pleasing' or 'meet,' suggests that neglecting the Word for daily tasks wasn't just inconvenient; it was unsuitable and contrary to their divine calling. While serving tables (meeting practical needs) is crucial for a healthy church, the apostles understood that their unique role was to be consumed with teaching, preaching, and prayer, which fuels the spiritual life of the community.
