Peter’s question, "Why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit?" reveals that Ananias's sin wasn't just about money; it was a deliberate attempt to deceive the very Spirit dwelling within the apostles. Peter isn't just asking what Ananias did, but why he chose to yield to such a deep deception, implying that resistance was possible and that this choice opened him up to Satan’s influence.
But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.” When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This scene unfolds right after a powerful depiction of the early church's unity and generosity, where believers were selling possessions to support others. Ananias and his wife Sapphira put on a show of this same selflessness, claiming to give the full price of their land while secretly keeping a portion for themselves. Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit's insight, directly confronts Ananias about his deceptive intent and questions why he allowed Satan to fill his heart with such a lie against the Spirit.
How could a seemingly small act of dishonesty bring such immediate and severe judgment? Peter points to a sinister force at work, revealing Satan's insidious strategy.
Peter doesn't just address Ananias's lie; he identifies the source of his compulsion: "Satan filled your heart." This highlights that sin isn't always a passive choice but can involve an active, malicious influence. The commentaries suggest 'filled' here means 'instigated' or 'impelled.' It implies Ananias yielded to a strong urge, allowing Satan to dominate his intentions.
Why is lying to Ananias and Sapphira considered lying to the Holy Spirit, and even God Himself? This reveals the profound divine presence within the early church.

The shock of this passage lies in Peter’s assertion that Ananias lied not just to him, but to the Holy Spirit. This wasn't a mere human deception; it was an offense against God Himself.
Ananias wasn't punished for being poor or for not giving everything. What was the true offense, and why did it demand such a severe consequence?
The core issue wasn't the amount Ananias held back, but the intent behind his actions. He sold a piece of property, which was his to keep or sell. The problem arose when he misrepresented his actions to appear more generous and godly than he was.
