Acts 27:21-25

What does Acts 27:21-25 mean?

Paul's sharp reminder isn't just about being right; it's a strategic move. By highlighting their past error in "gaining" harm instead of avoiding it, he sets the stage for them to now listen and truly "gain" their safety, using the same Greek word that originally meant to avoid loss. This subtle wordplay underscores his authority and prepares them to receive his life-saving prophecy.

Since they had been without food for a long time, Paul stood up among them and said, “Men, you should have listened to me and not have set sail from Crete and incurred this injury and loss. Yet now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. For this very night there stood before me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship, and he said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar. And behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.’ So take heart, men, for I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told.

What Acts 27:21-25 means

The ship is in the midst of a violent storm, and the sailors are desperate, having been through a terrifying ordeal for days with little food. Paul, who had previously warned them against sailing, steps forward to speak to the frightened crew and passengers, reminding them of his ignored counsel and the present dangers they face because of it. He then delivers a divine message of hope: their lives will be spared, though the ship will be lost.

Paul's Counsel and Their Loss

Have you ever seen a train wreck coming and wished people had just listened to you? Paul certainly did. He uses this moment of crisis to remind them of his earlier, ignored advice.

Paul, trapped on a ship in a raging storm, stands up to speak. It's not a moment for pleasantries; it's a moment of life and death. He points out a hard truth: "Men, you should have listened to me and not have set sail from Crete and incurred this injury and loss."

The Weight of "Should Have"

This isn't just Paul being smug. He's reminding them of a pivotal decision: staying put in Fair Havens versus sailing on to Phoenix. His counsel was to stay put. They, swayed by the crew's desire for a better harbor and perhaps a less severe wintering spot, chose to sail.

This choice led directly to the disaster they are now facing. The "harm and loss" weren't accidental; they were the direct consequence of disregarding wise counsel. Paul's words highlight how our decisions, especially those made against good advice, have tangible, often painful, outcomes.

Gaining Loss: A Counter-Intuitive Phrase

The phrase 'to have gained this harm and loss' sounds really strange in English. What could it possibly mean to 'gain' a loss?

Here's where we need to understand a nuance of the original language. The Greek word 'kerdos' (ker-dos) often means 'gain' or 'profit.' So, when Paul says 'to have gained this harm and loss,' he's using a clever, almost ironic, turn of phrase.
