Paul proudly points to his own hands, worn from labor. What does this tell us about his commitment and character?
As Paul speaks to the Ephesian elders, he lifts up his hands, a powerful visual of his dedication. These aren't just the hands of an apostle; they are the hands of a craftsman. He reminds them that he worked with his own hands, making tents, to provide for his own needs and for those traveling with him. This wasn't a sign of failure, but a deliberate choice.
A Deliberate Choice
Paul could have insisted on being supported by the churches, as he teaches others have the right to be (1 Corinthians 9:14). However, he chose to labor with his own hands for several key reasons:
- To avoid hindering the Gospel: Especially in new or challenging situations, Paul didn't want financial concerns to become a stumbling block or an excuse for opposition.
- To prevent being a burden: He didn't want to place an unnecessary financial strain on the churches, particularly if they were young or struggling.
- To model integrity: By working, he set an example of selfless dedication, showing that his ministry was not about personal gain but about serving Christ and others.
