The early believers didn't just celebrate Jesus on Sundays; they integrated their faith into their daily lives, continuing temple worship while also sharing meals at home. This verse highlights that their "gladness and singleness of heart" wasn't just about spiritual high moments, but extended to the ordinary act of sharing food together. It was a holistic joy that permeated every aspect of their communal life.
And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Fresh from the powerful outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the early believers are deeply committed to both public worship and private fellowship. They continue to attend the Temple for prayer and teaching, integrating their new faith with Jewish practice, while also gathering in homes for meals and fellowship that solidify their bond in Christ. This rhythm of communal devotion and shared life is characterized by joy and genuine simplicity.
The first Christians didn't abandon their Jewish roots overnight. They found a way to blend old and new, public and private worship.
The early believers continued to attend the Temple daily, a practice deeply ingrained in Jewish life. This wasn't about clinging to the old law, but about using the existing public space for their witness and for continued fellowship with other Jews who were searching for truth.
But their spiritual life wasn't confined to the Temple courts. They also gathered in homes ('breaking bread') for fellowship and likely the Lord's Supper. This shows a balance: a public presence in the established religious center and intimate, private gatherings that formed the core of their community life.
