Acts 2:32-36

What does Acts 2:32-36 mean?

This verse emphasizes that "all" are witnesses, likely referring to the whole 120 people present, not just the apostles. This highlights that the resurrection wasn't a secret event, but something confirmed by a significant group, leaving no room for doubt about the reality of Jesus's revival.

This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”’ Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”

What Acts 2:32-36 means

Peter is building a case, showing how the miraculous event of speaking in other tongues they're witnessing right now is proof that Jesus, whom they rejected and crucified, has been raised by God and exalted to His right hand. He’s arguing that this isn't some random event, but the fulfillment of ancient prophecy, specifically Psalm 110, which foretold a Messiah who would rule supremely. The verse in question is Peter's direct affirmation that they, the assembled disciples, are eyewitnesses to Jesus' resurrection, the foundational proof of His divine authority and power.

The Resurrection: God's Undeniable Act

Peter isn't just sharing news; he's presenting irrefutable evidence. What makes the resurrection of Jesus so central to his argument?

In Acts 2:32, Peter declares with unwavering certainty, "This Jesus God raised up." This isn't a passive event; it's an active, divine intervention.

God's Power Displayed

The resurrection wasn't something Jesus did on his own, nor was it a natural occurrence. Peter explicitly states that "God raised up" Jesus. This highlights God the Father's direct involvement, affirming Jesus' identity and mission. It's the ultimate stamp of approval on everything Jesus taught and did.

The Unshakable Foundation

Calvin emphasizes that the resurrection proves Jesus is alive, making his message credible. Without it, his teachings would be absurd and incredible. The resurrection is the bedrock of Christian faith, distinguishing Jesus from all other religious figures. It's the proof that his death was not the end, but a part of God's plan for victory.

Witnesses to the Living Christ

Peter says "we all are witnesses." What does it mean to be a witness to the resurrected Jesus, especially when facing opposition?

The second half of Acts 2:32 states, "...whereof we all are witnesses." This isn't just a casual observation; it's a profound declaration of commitment.
