Apollos was a powerhouse speaker, full of passion. But passion alone isn't the full picture of godly teaching.
The verse highlights Apollos's intense spiritual energy. The word for 'fervent' (often translated 'boiling' or 'seething') shows a man overflowing with zeal. This passion wasn't for his own glory, but to promote God's truth as he understood it.
However, the text is also clear about his limitations: 'knowing only the baptism of John.' This means his understanding of Jesus, while enthusiastic and accurately taught within its bounds, was incomplete. He likely knew about Jesus as the Messiah John pointed to, but lacked the deeper understanding of Christ's death, resurrection, and the full work of the Holy Spirit that the early apostles had.
This is a crucial reminder: genuine spiritual fervor and diligent teaching are wonderful, but they must be continually refined by a fuller understanding of God's revealed truth. Our passion should drive us to seek more of God's Word, not to settle for what we already know.
