Acts 17:22-29

What does Acts 17:22-29 mean?

Paul’s opening statement, "I perceive that in every way you are very religious," is a brilliant strategic move. The original Greek word here doesn't carry the negative sting of "superstitious" as we might assume; instead, it means something closer to "very devoted to the gods" or "extremely fearful of the divine." Paul uses this observation not to accuse, but to connect, acknowledging their deep-seated inclination toward worship as a bridge to introduce the true God they unknowingly sought.

So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for “‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, “‘For we are indeed his offspring.’ Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man.

What Acts 17:22-29 means

Paul finds himself in Athens, a city renowned for its philosophy and art, yet utterly consumed by idolatry, with countless statues and altars to various gods. After causing a stir by preaching about Jesus and the resurrection, he's brought before the Areopagus, a high council, to explain his strange teachings. This is his chance to address the educated Athenians, and he begins by acknowledging their deep religious devotion, subtly preparing them to hear about the one true God they are unknowingly seeking.

The Art of the Respectful Opening

Paul faced a city drowning in idols. So why did he start by complimenting them? Discover the surprising strategy behind his first words.

Paul lands in Athens and is immediately struck by the overwhelming amount of idolatry. Everywhere he looks, there are statues and altars to countless gods.

Yet, instead of launching into a fiery condemnation, Paul begins with a masterful opening. He doesn't accuse them of being wrong; he observes that they are deeply religious.

A Strategic Observation

** Paul uses a word that, in English, often has a negative feel: 'superstitious'. But in the original Greek, it carried a broader meaning. It could mean overly fearful of the gods, but it could also simply mean 'very religious' or 'devoted to worshipping the divine'.

Paul, being incredibly perceptive and wise, chooses to emphasize the devotion rather than the error. He noticed their dedication to worshipping something higher.

Building a Bridge, Not a Wall

** Think about it: if you want to share an important idea with someone who might disagree, do you start by pointing out all their flaws? Probably not. Paul knew that to reach the Athenians, he needed to connect with them first.

By acknowledging their religious fervor, he showed respect and opened the door for them to listen. He didn't call them 'foolish' for worshipping idols; he called them 'very religious,' which was both true and disarming.
