The text subtly highlights that Paul and Silas were not just enduring their suffering, but actively "praying and singing hymns," suggesting their praise was an ongoing practice, not just a reaction to hardship. This wasn't a quiet, internal moment; the original language implies they were singing with a fervor that caused the other prisoners to listen intently, turning their dungeon into an unexpected venue for worship.
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were unfastened.
