When we hear the word 'prophet,' our minds might jump to crystal balls and predicting the future. But in the New Testament, the role of a prophet was so much richer and more vital.
A Broader Spiritual Gift
The Bible describes prophets as a key spiritual gift within the early church, ranked just below apostles (1 Corinthians 12:28). While some prophets, like Agabus in this passage, did foretell future events, their role was primarily about speaking God's truth.
- Inspired Teachers: They expounded on God's Word, helping believers understand deeper spiritual truths and apply them to life.
- Encouragers & Exhorters: They often built up the community, offering divine insight to guide and comfort.
- Messengers of God's Will: Whether foretelling or simply speaking forth God's message, their words were meant to align the church with God's purposes.
