Peter felt he was just starting his sermon, but the Holy Spirit had already begun His work. What does this tell us about God's initiative?
The verse highlights a beautiful, and perhaps humbling, aspect of God's action: His timing and initiative often precede our own. Peter recounts, 'As I began to speak...' (Acts 11:15). The scholars note that 'as I began' might even mean 'while I was speaking,' suggesting the Spirit's outpouring happened during Peter's sermon, not just after it concluded.
God's Proactive Love
This isn't just about Peter. The key phrase 'just as on us at the beginning' points back to Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4). On that day, the Spirit's arrival was dramatic and undeniable, empowering the disciples immediately. Here, the Spirit falls on Cornelius and his household as Peter speaks, demonstrating that God isn't waiting for our perfect sermon or our full understanding. He is actively moving, drawing people to Himself.
This shows us that God's work of bringing people into His family is not dependent on human eloquence or perfect theological delivery. It’s driven by His own love and Spirit, often moving in ways that surprise us and confirm His sovereign plan.
