Has God ever surprised you with His goodness? In Acts 10, God’s timing and recipients of His Spirit were a radical departure from expectations.
Peter was in the middle of speaking, likely explaining the gospel and God’s plan, when the Holy Spirit suddenly descended upon Cornelius and his household. This wasn't a delayed reaction; it was immediate and powerful.
A Moment of Divine Interruption
God doesn't always wait for our sermons to be finished or our theological points to be perfectly articulated. He can move powerfully while we are still speaking, demonstrating that His work isn't dependent on human perfection but on His sovereign grace. This event was a dramatic signal that God's plan of salvation was now expanding beyond the Jewish people to include the Gentiles, a concept that deeply astonished the Jewish believers present.
The Spirit Before Baptism
This is the only instance in Scripture where the Holy Spirit was given before baptism. This highlights the unique nature of this event and God's intentionality in demonstrating that salvation and the Spirit’s presence are not earned through religious rituals or ethnic identity, but are freely given by grace through faith.
