Jesus promised his followers power, but not the kind they might have expected. It wasn't about earthly dominion, but divine enablement.
Jesus tells his disciples they will receive "power" (dynamis in Greek) when the Holy Spirit comes upon them. This isn't just any kind of power; it's divine energy and enablement. It's the very force that equips them for their mission.
A Divine Infusion
This power is directly linked to the Holy Spirit's arrival. It's not something they generate themselves, but a gift from God. This empowers them to speak boldly, perform miracles, and endure hardship for the sake of the Gospel.
The Core Task: Witnessing
The purpose of this power is clear: to be Christ's "witnesses." This means testifying to who Jesus is, what He did, and what He accomplished, especially His resurrection. This witness is both historical – sharing what they saw and heard – and doctrinal – explaining the significance of Jesus' life and work.
