Luke meticulously lists the names of the apostles. Why this detailed roll call at such a moment?
Luke doesn't just say 'the disciples were there.' He names them: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. This list is significant for several reasons:
Reaffirmation After Failure
Many of these men had scattered in fear during Jesus' arrest and crucifixion. Luke lists them here to reaffirm that they have returned to their post, united and restored by Christ. Their presence together, except for Judas, signifies their renewed commitment.
A Foundation for the Future
These are the men Jesus chose to lead the early church. By listing them, Luke establishes the foundational leadership for the new movement, emphasizing their collective presence and readiness for what was to come.
Unity in Diversity
The list includes men with different backgrounds – like Simon the Zealot (a political radical) and Matthew (a former tax collector). Their unity in this upper room, despite their differences, highlights the power of the Holy Spirit to bring diverse individuals together for a common purpose.
