This list doesn't just describe bad behavior; it starts with an inward turning: "lovers of self." All the following traits flow from this, not from some external evil, but from a self-centeredness that pushes God and others out of their rightful place. It's a stark reminder that the root of so many outward problems is a disordered heart.

English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is writing to Timothy, his young protégé, urging him to remain steadfast in the face of challenging times and false teachers. He warns that in the "last days," a spiritual decay will be evident in people's character and conduct, moving away from genuine godliness. This description of selfish, ungodly behavior sets the stage for Paul's instruction on how Timothy should live and minister amidst such a climate.
This verse lists a cascade of negative traits. But where does it all begin? Paul points to something fundamental.
Paul begins this list with 'lovers of self.' In the original Greek, this isn't just about healthy self-esteem. It implies an excessive, selfish devotion – putting oneself at the absolute center of everything.
The Self-Centered Spiral
When 'self' is the ultimate priority, it naturally leads to the other characteristics.
The end of the verse throws in 'ungrateful' and 'unholy.' These might seem different, but they're deeply connected to the traits preceding them.
Paul concludes this part of the description with 'ungrateful' and 'unholy.' These aren't just random additions; they reveal the spiritual bankruptcy that results from a self-absorbed life.

Ungrateful: Forgetting the Source
Being 'ungrateful' means failing to acknowledge and give thanks for the good things we receive. When our focus is solely on ourselves, we fail to see that provision and blessing come from God. We become entitled, believing we deserve everything, rather than recognizing it as a gift.
Unholy: Disconnected from the Sacred
'Unholy' describes a lack of reverence, a separation from that which is sacred or set apart for God. This isn't just about being 'bad'; it's about a worldview that doesn't honor God's holiness or acknowledge His rightful place. When self is king, God is dethroned, leading to a life devoid of true sacredness.
