Beyond self-love and greed, Paul lists a cascade of negative traits. How are these behaviors connected to the foundational 'loves' he just mentioned?
The characteristics that follow – 'proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy' – are the natural outworking of a heart consumed by self and money.
Pride and Arrogance
When 'self' is our highest value, we naturally puff ourselves up. Pride stems from an inflated sense of our own importance, while arrogance is the outward expression of that superiority.
Abusive and Disobedient Behavior
Self-centeredness often leads to a lack of empathy. If others are merely tools or obstacles to our own desires, we can become verbally or emotionally abusive. Disobedience to parents, a fundamental societal structure, shows a disregard for rightful authority when it conflicts with personal will.
Ungrateful and Ungodly Living
Gratitude flows from recognizing our dependence on others and on God. When we are focused inward, we fail to acknowledge the good we receive, leading to ingratitude. This disconnect from thankfulness reflects a deeper 'unholiness' – a state of being set apart from God and His ways.
