Paul urges Timothy to remind people not to quarrel about words. What seems like a minor point is actually incredibly significant, because these word-fights, while seeming intellectual, are ultimately empty and destructive, doing no good and only harming those who listen.
Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness,
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is instructing Timothy on how to lead and teach the church in Ephesus, a situation filled with false teachers and divisive arguments. Timothy needs to faithfully pass on sound doctrine to trustworthy men who will then teach others, all while firmly addressing those who twist God's word into pointless disputes. This verse comes right after Paul emphasizes the importance of rightly handling the word of truth and before he talks about sound teaching versus worthless speculation.
Paul tells Timothy to 'remind' believers. What's the goal here? It's not just a casual mention, but a vital task for spiritual health.
A Gentle Nudge, A Firm Charge
Paul begins with 'Remind them of these things.' This implies that the truth has already been taught. The task is to bring it back to their minds, to keep it fresh. It's like tending a garden, making sure the soil is rich and the plants are watered.
But it's not just gentle nudging. Paul immediately follows with a solemn charge: 'charge them before God not to quarrel about words.' This isn't a suggestion; it's a command given under the authority of God Himself. The stakes are incredibly high.
Paul calls quarreling about words 'useless' and 'ruinous.' Why are such debates so destructive, and what are we really arguing about?
Words Without Weight
Paul is clear: arguing over words offers 'no good.' This isn't about engaging in deep theological discussion; it's about pointless debates, hair-splitting, and sophistry that distract from the core message of the Gospel.
These arguments are not just unproductive; they are actively harmful. They 'ruin the hearers,' meaning they damage the spiritual well-being of those caught in the conflict. They can create division, confusion, and a loss of focus on what truly matters for salvation and godly living.
