Paul isn't just enduring hardship for any believers, but specifically for "the elect," reminding us that salvation isn't a casual thing but a precious gift chosen by God. He links his suffering directly to their gaining salvation and eternal glory, showing how deeply intertwined his mission is with God's plan for His chosen people. This highlights that even through immense struggle, there's a profound purpose rooted in God's sovereign choice.
Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is writing to his protégé Timothy, urging him to persevere through hardship for the sake of spreading the Gospel. He's just described various faithful people and contrasted them with false teachers, emphasizing that God's powerful Word cannot be silenced, even by opposition. This verse is Paul's personal declaration of why he endures suffering, linking his own perseverance directly to the salvation of God's chosen people.
Paul doesn't just preach about hardship; he lives it. Why does he embrace suffering so willingly?
Paul connects his willingness to endure all things directly with the salvation of 'the elect.' This isn't about him seeking glory, but about enabling God's chosen people to receive salvation. His suffering becomes a means to an end – the eternal security and glory of those God has called. It highlights a profound truth: the work of spreading the Gospel often involves personal cost, but that cost is borne for the ultimate good of others and God's eternal plan.
Where does true salvation come from, and what is its ultimate destination?
This verse clearly points to Jesus Christ as the singular source of salvation: 'the salvation that is in Christ Jesus.' It's not found in any other name or by any other means. Furthermore, the goal of this salvation is not just escaping judgment but attaining 'eternal glory.' This expands our understanding of salvation beyond a one-time event to a glorious, ongoing reality that culminates in sharing in Christ's own glory forever. It’s a salvation that transforms us, body and soul, for eternity.
