and to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is addressing the Thessalonian believers, who are facing persecution and hardship. He's assuring them that God sees their suffering and will bring them relief and justice when Jesus returns in glory with his angels to judge the world. This promise of future vindication is a source of comfort and hope amidst their present troubles.
Paul’s readers were going through a tough time. He offers them a powerful promise of future relief. What does that mean for us today?
The Two Sides of Affliction
The Thessalonian believers were facing significant hardship, perhaps even persecution. Paul acknowledges their suffering directly: "you who are afflicted." He doesn't downplay it.
But he immediately pivots to a future hope: "and to grant relief to you... when the Lord Jesus is revealed." This relief isn't just a small comfort; it's a divine intervention that will set things right.
This teaches us that our present struggles, while real and painful, are not the end of the story. God sees our afflictions, and He has promised a time of ultimate restoration and peace when Jesus returns.
The "relief" Paul mentions is tied to a specific event. What kind of spectacle will accompany Jesus when He returns?
More Than a Quiet Arrival
The verse doesn't describe Jesus returning as a humble lamb, but as a powerful King: "when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels." This isn't a subtle appearance; it's a grand, awe-inspiring revelation.
Think of it like this: imagine the most glorious, powerful entrance you can conceive of, amplified beyond measure. This is the imagery Paul uses to convey the authority and power displayed when Jesus returns.
This emphasizes that Jesus’s return is not just about our relief, but also about His ultimate triumph and the establishment of His reign. It’s a cosmic event that will bring justice and vindication.
