It's easy to read this and think David was just reacting to danger, but notice the order: the Philistines heard he was anointed king, then they came, and then David heard of their advance. This shows David wasn't just a warrior king, but a leader who was aware and prepared, actively choosing to descend to a fortified position rather than waiting to be besieged.
When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went down to the stronghold. Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. And David inquired of the LORD, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the LORD said to David, “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Philistines, Israel's long-time enemies, have just heard that David, a man who has already proven himself a formidable warrior against them, has been crowned king of all Israel. This news sparks an immediate military response as they mobilize to find and likely confront their new, powerful adversary. David, however, is not caught off guard; he strategically retreats to a fortified location, preparing for the inevitable conflict.
When God elevates someone, you can be sure the enemy will take notice. The Philistines didn't just hear about David's anointing; they reacted immediately. What does their response tell us about spiritual warfare?
The Philistines represented the opposition to God's people and His purposes. Their immediate military action upon hearing of David's anointing shows that the enemy actively opposes God's chosen leaders and His plans. It wasn't just political news; it was a threat to their own dominance. This highlights a crucial spiritual principle: God's breakthroughs often provoke the enemy's attacks. David, newly crowned, faces immediate opposition, not congratulations. This is a pattern we see throughout Scripture and in our own lives – advancement in God's kingdom often comes with increased spiritual conflict.
Facing a massive invasion, David didn't panic or charge blindly. His response reveals wisdom learned from past experiences. What can we learn from his decisive action?
The verse states, 'But David heard of it and went down to the stronghold.' This wasn't a sign of fear, but of strategic thinking. David, who had already faced Goliath and numerous skirmishes with the Philistines, knew his limitations and the enemy's strength. Instead of meeting them head-on in an open field, he retreated to a place of defense – the stronghold. This signifies the importance of wise counsel and strategic positioning rather than impulsive bravery. David gathered his strength, assessed the situation from a secure position, and waited for the right moment. It’s a lesson in discernment: knowing when to stand and fight, and when to strategically withdraw to a place of safety to regroup and plan.
