When we can no longer serve as we once did, how do we ensure the mission continues? Barzillai's selfless act offers a beautiful model of generational handover.
Trusting the Next Generation
Barzillai, recognizing his own limitations due to old age, doesn't simply refuse David's offer. Instead, he redirects the king's generosity to his son, Chimham. This demonstrates:
- Self-awareness: He understands his physical and perhaps even mental capacity has waned.
- Generosity: He is willing to sacrifice his own potential comfort and honor for his son's advancement and for the continuation of loyalty to David.
- Trust: He entrusts his son, Chimham, to David's care, essentially saying, 'My service is done, but my son can carry on this relationship and commitment.'
