Absalom's chilling command to "Do not fear; have I not commanded you? Be courageous and be valiant" reveals his manipulative genius. He's not just giving an order; he's twisting God's word and the very concept of courage to orchestrate a brutal act of revenge, making his servants feel righteous rather than like murderers.
Then Absalom commanded his servants, “Mark when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon,’ then kill him. Do not fear; have I not commanded you? Be courageous and be valiant.” So the servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose, and each mounted his mule and fled.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Absalom is orchestrating a brutal act of revenge against his half-brother Amnon for raping their sister Tamar. This verse reveals Absalom's meticulous and chilling plan to kill Amnon during a feast, a plan he executes immediately after this command, setting in motion further division and violence within David's family.
Absalom's actions are swift and brutal, but are they righteous? This passage forces us to confront the dark side of seeking retribution.
Absalom orchestrates the murder of his half-brother Amnon. This isn't a spontaneous act of rage; it's a calculated plan. He waits for the opportune moment – when Amnon is drunk and vulnerable – to strike. While Absalom's motive stems from a deep wound (Amnon’s violation of their sister Tamar), his method is murder, not justice administered by rightful authority. He is taking matters into his own hands, driven by a desire for personal revenge. The Bible consistently warns against personal vengeance, reminding us that 'Vengeance is mine,' says the Lord (Romans 12:19).
Absalom uses God's name to motivate his servants. How can a command to murder be twisted into something that sounds righteous?
Absalom tries to legitimize his murderous command by invoking divine authority: 'have I not commanded you? Be courageous and be valiant.' This is a dangerous manipulation. He’s not quoting God; he’s using God’s name to coerce obedience for his own sinful plan. He is essentially saying, 'God is on our side, so do this terrible thing.' This reveals how easily human sin can masquerade as obedience. True courage and valor are found in following God's actual commands, not in obeying a human leader who twists scripture or invokes divine backing for wicked deeds.
