Notice how Joab frames their courage not just as a personal choice, but as a responsibility for others – their people and God's cities. The truly remarkable part is his ultimate surrender: "may the LORD do what seems good to him," showing that true bravery isn't about controlling the outcome, but about acting faithfully regardless of it.
Be of good courage, and let us be courageous for our people, and for the cities of our God, and may the LORD do what seems good to him.” So Joab and the people who were with him drew near to battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him. And when the Ammonites saw that the Syrians fled, they likewise fled before Abishai and entered the city. Then Joab returned from fighting against the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Ammonites, aided by a formidable Syrian army, have just insulted David's messengers, a grave offense that demands a response. Joab, David's commander, recognizes the immense challenge ahead, urging his men to stand strong for their people and for God's cities, acknowledging that ultimate victory rests in the Lord's hands. This call to bravery comes just before Israel plunges into a significant battle that will determine the fate of both kingdoms.
Joab's words are more than just a pep talk. They reveal a profound understanding of where true courage comes from, especially when facing overwhelming odds.
Joab rallies his troops by calling them to be "courageous." But notice how he frames this courage: not just for themselves, but "for our people, and for the cities of our God." This isn't about bravado; it's about a deep commitment fueled by a higher purpose. When we fight for what God has declared holy and for the people He loves, our courage finds its deepest roots. It’s a courage that doesn’t depend on our own strength, but on the God who stands with us.
Even in the heat of battle and calls for bravery, Joab acknowledges a truth that puts everything in perspective: God's ultimate authority.
The powerful ending of Joab's exhortation is, 'may the LORD do what seems good to him.' This isn't resignation; it's active trust. It means that while we fight with all our might, with all our courage, we ultimately place the outcome in God's hands. We can be bold and strive for victory, but we must also embrace the reality that God’s plans are supreme. This surrender frees us from the anxiety of needing to control everything and allows us to serve with integrity, knowing He is in control.
