2 Peter 3:9-10

The verse emphasizes that God's perceived "slowness" isn't a lack of action, but a profound patience rooted in His desire for everyone to have the chance to turn to Him. This means His timing is driven by His deep love for humanity, not by any indifference.
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Peter is addressing a growing skepticism among some believers who are mocking the idea that Jesus will return, pointing to the apparent delay as proof he won't. He reminds them that God's timing is different from ours, and this apparent slowness is actually an act of divine patience, offering more time for people to turn to Him. This patience is precisely why Jesus hasn't returned yet, giving everyone the opportunity for repentance before judgment.
Ever felt like God is taking too long to act? The scoffers in Peter's day felt that way too! Let's unpack what 'slowness' really means in God's timing.
God's Timing vs. Our Perception
Peter addresses a common complaint: "The Lord is not slow... as some count slowness." This wasn't about God being lazy or forgetting. The people Peter wrote to were seeing the delay of Jesus' promised return and mocking it. They thought God had messed up or given up.
But Peter clarifies: God's perceived 'slowness' is actually divine patience. It's a deliberate choice, not a deficiency. His timing is perfect, even when it doesn't align with our immediate expectations.
What does God truly want for humanity? It's a question that gets to the core of His mission for us.
More Than Just Waiting
Peter doesn't just say God is patient; he explains why. "Not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance." This is the powerful engine driving God's patience.
