2 Peter 1:5-10

What does 2 Peter 1:5-10 mean?

It's easy to see this as a simple checklist, but Peter is actually urging us to actively build on what God has already given us. He doesn't say "gain faith," but "supplement your faith," implying faith is the foundation, and we're meant to add to it with deliberate, intentional steps of growth. This isn't about acquiring new beliefs, but about fleshing out the faith we already have with God-honoring actions and understanding.

For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.

What 2 Peter 1:5-10 means

Peter is writing to encourage believers facing doubt and false teaching, reminding them of the sure foundation they have in God's promises. He's just described how God has given them "everything needed for life and godliness" through knowing Jesus, and now he's urging them to actively build on that foundation by growing in various spiritual qualities. This verse kicks off a list of virtues that, when added to faith, will help them live a godly life and secure their calling and election.

Faith Isn't Meant to Be Alone

Ever feel like your faith is just… passive? Like you believe, but not much happens? This verse calls out that idea immediately.

The Apostle Peter isn't just saying 'have faith.' He's building on it! He uses the phrase 'make every effort to supplement your faith with...' This means faith is the bedrock, the essential starting point, but it's not the whole building.

Think of it like this: Faith is believing God's promises and the work of Jesus. But Peter wants us to actively add to that foundation. What are we adding? 'Virtue' and 'knowledge' are the first two bricks he lays out. Faith needs action and understanding to grow and become robust.

The 'Why' Behind the Effort

Peter starts this verse with 'For this very reason...' Why is he telling us to add these qualities? What's the 'reason'?

To understand the 'why,' we need to look just before this verse. Peter has just reminded believers of their 'precious and very great promises' (2 Peter 1:4) – the assurance of salvation and sharing in God's divine nature through Christ. These are incredible gifts!

Because we have received such amazing things, Peter urges us to respond by actively growing. It’s a grateful response to God’s grace. The 'effort' isn't to earn salvation (that's already given!), but to live out the new, divine life we've been gifted. It's about maturing into the people God has called us to be, reflecting His character in the world.
