Peter isn't just saying their message is true; he's highlighting that it's rooted in personal experience, not mere stories. He emphasizes that they saw Christ's glory firsthand, contrasting it sharply with the "cleverly devised myths" people often believe. This grounds their entire message in undeniable, witnessed reality.
For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Peter is addressing the real danger of false teachers who are spreading deceptive teachings about Jesus. He's reminding his readers that the apostles, himself included, didn't invent the message of Christ's return but personally witnessed his glory and power. This eyewitness testimony stands in stark contrast to the "cleverly devised myths" that the false teachers were peddling.
Ever wonder what makes Christian beliefs different from any other story? Peter tackles this head-on.
Peter is fiercely defending the truth of the Gospel. He's saying, 'We didn't make this stuff up!' The core message about Jesus – His power and His return – isn't based on some made-up fairy tales or philosophical theories.
From Imagination to Reality
He contrasts 'cleverly devised myths' with personal experience. The 'myths' imply something carefully constructed, perhaps to deceive or impress, but ultimately fictional. Peter's counter is powerful: 'we were eyewitnesses.' This grounds the entire Christian message in verifiable reality, not speculation.
What does it mean to witness Jesus' 'majesty'? It's more than just a grand show.
The word 'majesty' here points to something incredibly impressive, glorious, and awe-inspiring. Peter and the other apostles didn't just see Jesus perform a few miracles; they saw His divine nature revealed.
More Than a Miracle
Think about the Transfiguration, which Peter experienced (as detailed in the preceding verses, 2 Peter 1:17-18). He saw Jesus speaking with Moses and Elijah, His face shining like the sun, and His clothes dazzling white. This wasn't just a human being; it was God in human flesh, revealing His true glory.
This wasn't a private, hidden event. Peter's purpose in sharing this is to declare it publicly, countering any notion that the Gospel is a mere human invention.
