Jehoshaphat ruled Judah, a kingdom that, for the most part, still held onto God. His son Jehoram ruled Israel, a kingdom far from God. How did this division affect things?
Two Nations, One Story
This verse highlights a critical historical moment: Jehoshaphat, a king of Judah, is reigning, and , Jehoram, Ahab's son, is king over Israel. These are two separate kingdoms, the divided Northern Kingdom (Israel) and the Southern Kingdom (Judah). While Jehoshaphat of Judah was generally a godly king, Jehoram of Israel was not. This verse, by placing them side-by-side chronologically, underscores the ongoing spiritual divide between the two nations. Israel, the Northern Kingdom, had largely fallen away from worshipping the Lord, while Judah, the Southern Kingdom, experienced periods of faithfulness and revival under kings like Jehoshaphat. Jehoram's reign in Israel marks a continuation of the spiritual decay there.
