King Josiah didn't just read the Law; he stood by the pillar and made a public, tangible commitment. This wasn't a private prayer, but a solemn, initiated covenant – he was actively stepping into leadership, not just following it, to lead his people in obedience. The phrase "all his heart and all his soul" shows this was meant to be a total life transformation, not a casual agreement.
And the king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people joined in the covenant.
English Standard Version (ESV)
King Josiah, after discovering the lost Book of the Law in the Temple, is reacting to its powerful words. This covenant-making is his and the nation's solemn commitment to obey God's ancient commands, setting the stage for a radical reformation and purging of idolatry throughout Judah. The people’s participation shows a powerful, albeit temporary, moment of national repentance and renewed allegiance to the Lord.
Standing by a pillar might seem like a small detail, but it points to something monumental. What does this act signify?
King Josiah's public stand by the pillar before the Lord isn't just a ceremony; it's a powerful declaration. Pillars in ancient Near Eastern culture often marked significant places or agreements. By standing there, Josiah anchors his commitment to God in a visible, tangible way. It signifies that this isn't a private whisper but a public, binding oath. This act is the king taking his place as the spiritual leader, setting the standard for his people.
Josiah's covenant was thorough, but what does it mean to commit 'with all his heart and all his soul'?
The commitment described goes far beyond merely following rules. The emphasis on 'all his heart and all his soul' points to a total, unreserved dedication. This isn't about outward conformity alone, but an inward transformation. It means aligning one's deepest desires, motivations, and very being with God's commands. This kind of commitment is foundational to true obedience – it's obedience that flows from a transformed inner self, not just a sense of duty.
Josiah's covenant was sealed with words, but what made those words so powerful?
The covenant is explicitly tied to 'the words of this covenant that were written in this book.' This points directly to the Law of Moses, recently rediscovered by Josiah. This signifies that the covenant wasn't based on Josiah's ideas or the people's whims, but on God's revealed will. The written Word becomes the ultimate authority and the blueprint for obedience. For the covenant to be 'performed,' it had to be grounded in Scripture, making it a covenant God, based His Word.
