Even though Josiah enacted sweeping reforms, the text points to Manasseh's deep-seated idolatry as the persistent reason for God's lingering wrath. It's a stark reminder that even one generation's repentance can't immediately erase the lasting consequences of profound sin. The verse highlights the gravity of provoking God's anger, showing it's not easily appeased.
Still the LORD did not turn from the burning of his great wrath, by which his anger was kindled against Judah, because of all the provocations with which Manasseh had provoked him. And the LORD said, “I will remove Judah also out of my sight, as I have removed Israel, and I will cast off this city that I have chosen, Jerusalem, and the house of which I said, My name shall be there.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
King Josiah has just initiated a radical religious reform, tearing down idolatrous altars and purging Judah of foreign worship. Despite Josiah's earnest efforts to turn the nation back to God, the prophet Jeremiah and other voices of warning continue to proclaim that God's judgment is inevitable due to the deep-seated sin of previous generations, especially King Manasseh's extensive idolatry. This verse highlights that even Josiah's revival couldn't fully avert the consequences of past disobedience, as God's righteous anger for those provocations remained.
Why would God's anger burn so fiercely against Judah, even after so much time had passed? It wasn't a single mistake, but a pattern of behavior.
This verse points to the cumulative effect of sin. God's "great wrath" wasn't sparked by one event, but by "all the provocations." This highlights how persistent, defiant sin builds up over time, making God's judgment inevitable.
Manasseh, in particular, is called out for provoking God. His reign was marked by idolatry, child sacrifice, and turning Jerusalem into a center for pagan worship. These weren't minor offenses; they were direct assaults on God's covenant and His very character. The anger described here is a righteous response to deliberate rebellion against the Holy One.
We often struggle with the idea of God's anger. Is it like human anger, or something else entirely? This verse shows it's a serious, unwavering attribute.
The verse doesn't shy away from God's "great wrath" and "burning anger." This isn't an uncontrolled, emotional outburst, but a holy and righteous response to sin and rebellion. God's nature is opposed to evil, and His anger signifies His active displeasure and judgment against what He hates.
Crucially, the text states, "Still the LORD did not turn..." This persistence in anger reflects God's faithfulness to His covenant, which included consequences for disobedience. While God is also rich in mercy, His justice demands a response to sin. The burning anger signifies that judgment was not averted because the provocations continued.
